paxil works for me…..you may have to take a few different drugs to see what works for you… but I would definitely see a doctor because depression IS hereditary! References :

Lexapro 20mgReferences :
300 mg wellbutrin with 150mg in the morning and 150mg in the afternoon. It sort of works and sort of doesn’t, but I do feel better. References :
I can only say that for me Zoloft worked the best for me. Now the thing with antidepressants is that each one seems to target some symptoms more than others. For example with me the Zoloft helped to not only address my depression but also my anxiety. While depression is targeted by a number of different medications each one acts a little bit differently on the neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) and addresses slightly different symptoms. In my family, like in yours there is a strong incidence of depresion. One of the things that some doctors will also want to know is if a family member has been on any antidepressants and if it worked for them, sometimes there is a correlation in familial depression and response to medication. While I was the first one to ever really seek treatment I have not been the last and the medications that I have used that have worked have also been recommended to members of my family. Good luck to you and know that depression is a very treatable illness.References : Life

I am very glad you are taking the initiative to visit your doctor. I know it is a bit scary, but you are not alone.
As far as the chemical imbalance, it is not your fault. You are not ‘choosing’ to suffer from depression. Please do not ever blame yourself. Maybe your first steps may even convince others in your family to get help.References :
Are you sure you should be using anti depressants?
Most persons goes through depression at some point or the other in life. How you deal with it makes the difference.
First of all you need to focus on the positive, happy and productive side of things.
Next you need to eat healthy. By this I mean making sure that every day your diet includes all kinds of fruits, all kinds of vegetables – inclusive of raw ones, all kinds of nuts, meat – not over indulgence, and your carbohydrates – in the form of whole foods.
Take supplements to compensate for the once you might be missing from your diet.
The most complete supplement I know is Ultra Vitality NutraPack
Others worth checking out are
Tranquility – containing the B vitamins that is essential for the nervous system and a
calming herb called Kava Kava
Advanced Omega which are fatty acids essential for the proper function of the neuro transmitters in the nervous system.
Clarity which also is formulated with herbs for the nourishing of the nervous system.
Once your body is properly nourished it produces the relevant body chemicals necessary for the effective management of stressful situations.
All pharmaceutical products carry side effects. Supplements don’t.References : For more information on the above supplements go to http://www.symmetrydirect.com/jgrant
It took my doctor and I 13 months to find a med that worked and I could tolerate the side affects. Your question is a dangerous because you have to find the right one for you. Not every body else.
Good LuckReferences :
I’ve been taking Wellbutrin SR (150 mg) in the morning, and Lexapro (10 mg) in the evening – and that has been working well for me.References : Been taking it for over a year and a half.
