Hi,

To cut to the chase, BIPOLAR (as you might already suspect) means “two poles” and is simply the new “in” word for Manic Depression where a person cycles between “very big highs” (mania) at one end of the ‘pole’ and “very low Lows” (depression) at the other end of the ‘pole, which is a far wider range than most other peoples - and it lasts for more than a couple of weeks.

Many famous and highly intelligent people have/had manic depression including Sir Winston Churchill, Stephen Fry, Carrie Fisher, Spike Milligan, Ben Stiller, DMX and many others. Managed properly, it can be lived with, and in fact because the “mania” (the highs) are so exhilarating, most manic depressives wouldn’t swap their manic depression for being normal. There are three treatments for Bipolar, and only one of them involves antidepressant drugs.

Normal Depression is a bit different.

I've been in fairly hefty senior management positions for around 4 decades and have had up to 500 staff under me at times. I’ve had to deal frequently with many people suffering Depression, so know a little about what you are going through. Depression is far more common than most people think because most people either don't recognise it or hide it. In fact, I think the stats show that up to one-in-five people suffer from Depression, all over the world. It's good that you're getting it out in the open and seeking advice. Just be careful of the myths and here-say, though. A lot of people don’t know what they’re talking about and just seem to make things up as they go along.

Nowadays, I produce videos, and last year made a 35-minute DVD presented by a top UK Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr Darryl Britto, who is a personal friend of mine, and who wanted to squash all the myths about depression, because he felt that very few people thoroughly understood what it is all about. In the DVD he includes an explanation of the three main treatments available. It's purposely in simple layperson's language and aimed at 4 categories of people.
1) Those with Depression,
2) Those who think they may have Depression,
3) Friends and family of those with Depression, and
4) People training in the healthcare sector.

If interested, you can see a FREE PREVIEW on YouTube at http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Ce1viJ7zqCU

I also have a Blog at http://business-sage.blogspot.com which has heaps and heaps of useful FREE ADVICE about enhancing your lot in life, which you might be interested in. (Some of it is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.)

Also I’ve include some web links below, many of which are professional bodies connected to Bipolar and Depression with stacks of free information.

I sincerely hope this information might help you, and that I haven’t given you too much text here – but I felt it important to lever you away from (sometimes) harmful here-say, gossip and myths. People suffering Depression are not alone, you know. Depression is treatable in the majority of cases and it's truly not as bad as people think it is. Armed with the FACTS of what Depression is all about, makes it ten times more easy to handle.

Good luck & Cheers

No they are quite different. Moderately severe depression is less severe than manic depression (named for the manic "high" followed by the terrible depression).

I have suffered with depression in the past, and found it useful to try to stay focused on what is happening around me, so far as to list (in my head) what I can see, hear, smell etc. Otherwise I would get tied up with my thoughts and the more internal I got, the deeper the depression would feel.

I have found in the past that the Depression Alliance were extremely helpful in understanding and coping with my depression. Hope this helps!
References :
http://www.depressionalliance.org/

Manic depression (bi polar) is not the same as clinical depression or situational depression. The degree of the depression makes no difference, manic depression is entirely different and not what you have.
Bi polar is where you have huge up's followed by enormous downs. Be thankful you don't have that. I hope you are soon well again
References :
it is a fact that EVERYONE will be depressed at some point in their life but that does not mean it s clinical or manic....clinical and manic are because of a chemical imbalance of the brain and is not treatable. There s medication to contain and balance it but most of the time it will last your whole life. Severe depression is treatable and usually wont last forever. As for the difference Manic is when you go from extreme highs to extreme lows very quickly and depression is where you are mostly just sad.
With medication, surrounding yourself wth happiness and trying to make life worth it then you should oversome this...Good Luck :)
References :
Clinical depression is a very extreme form. Moderately severe is less extreme than clinical and manic depression (otherwise known as bi-polar disorder) is ranging from extremely happy emotions to extremely depressed emotion. They are all different.
References :
see no bs -
the word economic depression as used in the Great Depression is a so called " sample of one " . economics textbooks have no definition of depression . yes during the last depression stock prices went down by 25 % and 30 % unemployment and many other statistics are flung around to let us know that we are in a better shape now than then .
economics as we know it is barely a century old . it depends on samples and there is only a sample of one . and sample of one is no sample at all . how can you come to a conclusion unless you have 5 or more samples . see my point ?
if there is a World War III will US and Russia again fight Germany and Japan .. obviously not .. so you cannot trust a sample of one .
in 1930 the average American ( let alone the average Chinese ) was enormously poor . people had one good suit ate meat once a week . they went from being poor to being in poverty .
now we are all rich . i am lower middle class and in India and even i have 3 cell phones and 2 televisions and 3 suits .
so the average person is hurt much worse now as far as decline of standard of living goes .
people will not go to soup kitchens literally . they will buy less HDTV and no Blu Ray player . that is the modern depression and is as bad economically .
we are in a depression which will even in best case scenario be here for 24 more months and followed by a slow recovery for 5 to 15 more years for return to 2005 levels of prosperity .
depression , recession these are word games . it is as bad now as 1930 .
if you are asking will hundreds stand in line for soup kitchen .. no .. not possible .. is it a depression now .. very much so
References :
i am a lay economist
