Chemical imbalance, I think. Think the term is bipolar.

it's a chemical imbalance. No way to "naturally" cure or control it.References :
Depression and mania arise from chemical imbalances in the brain – e.g. excess or lack of dopamine, noradrenalin or seratonin. It is not fully understood how these three transmitters being unbalanced causes the problems, only that certain drugs that help to block them can cure the problem.
Neither side is the right way to be. Being manic may feel good but causes all sorts of problems like overspending and dangerous risk taking behaviour.
It is difficult to naturally balance the two sides and they often need medication to keep them in check – being depressed or manic can be dangerous to the person and others.References :

People who say there is no way to control it are quite mistaken and are lapping up whatever psychiatrists are telling them- psychiatry and pharmaceutical companies work in very close connection and bi-polar is the disease au current. (+adhd)
Please look at "psychetruth" on youtube for a look at psychiatry today.
Chemical imbalances can be "corrected", in many ways.
I was believed to be bipolar, and refused to medicate. Instead, I detoxed- no more caffeine, no sugar, a raw food diet, and lots of exercise. I work on spiritual issues as they arise, examine my life, read philosophy, meditate, freak out occasionally in relationships and take responsibility- honest responsibility. I have lots of things going on in my body and mind, and I try to integrate it. Detoxing is really important if you want to honestly look at what is really going on with you. We have energy that swings like a pendulum just like every one does, but if you swing up high, you swing low, to learn. You don't want to change that, you want to watch it, and try to balance out your energy so you can transition smoothly high, low, middle, following your body's rhythm all in one day.
Yoga, detoxing, and fresh thinking is a good way to integrate-
Don't cop out on this. Freaks me out how fast "bipolar" is spreading. People refer to it the first chance they get. Learning to live is complex for a reason- If you are freaking out, you are stressed. If you're stressed, there's a reason. If your chemicals are out of balance, there IS A REASON. Taking a pill is going to make you feel good for a while but it is only going to damage your body and your mind in the long run. You create chemicals when you think. You learn how to live a worthwhile life by that process, and everyone now is just so apathetic about their own problems you don't mind if you're swallowing toxins and placebos that have no scientific basis. Psychology is not a science! Psychiatry is a Big Business. People are making billions by this phony concept. Why is it that it's socially acceptable to say I have bipolar, but not socially acceptable to say, I feel miserable today. Or invincible. It's repression, that's why. People consuming one more status- identifier. You are so uncomfortable with yourself that you feel like you'll be protected if you wear a stamp of approval- yep, it was really bad for her. Guess what. Even if it was really bad for you, as I am sure it was– anyone could easily get that bipolar stamp these days. And they are doing it, in stampedes.References :
I believe manic depression is triggered by a hormone imbalance, so depending on hormone levels, the sufferer moves from one mood to another without explanation. Possibly too much adrenaline, which causes the sufferer to go off on manic episodes where they believe they are invincible, and don't weigh up the consequences of their actions- their rationality goes out of the window due to the adrenaline.
But the next day, or when the adrenaline runs short, the sufferer then plunges into deep depression usually made worse by having to cope with the bill run up by excesses. It's controlled by a drug called lithium, which evens it out.References :
