When people are depressed, they aren't sick. They probably want to hurt the ones that hurt them. People need to learn more about depression and recognize the signs, so that they could get him help and in talk therapy and possibly medication. And then he wouldn't be depressed and this tragedy wouldn't have happened. But people don't care about depressed people.References :
Depression is so difficult to detect in adolescents because they hide so much, and a lot of the symptoms are also manifestations of just being adolescents. As they search for their identity, they become moody, secretative and develop unusual behaviors. One of the things a parent MUST do is establish close ties early in life, not as they become teenagers but when they are 3 and 4. Communicating, without judgement is important. Hate the behaviour but not the child.
If there is bullying at school, find out if your child is involved. Take a ride, cars are wonderful to tear down walls. Nobody wants to sit at a table and discuss their emotional pain. There has to be a safe place. I used to take my son out to dinner. Another time, he came into my bedroom, pulled out my trundle, and in the dark, told me about his teacher abusing him.
Kids interpret life through their own eyes, and when we yell at them for something, a sensitive child will keep that close to him and build more into it than you meant. If your child is sensitive, punishment is different than for a more out-going child. Each child must be raised according to his personality until he is mature enough to focus on his own strengths. Sadly, a lot of parents do not get close to the child, due to stress of their own, problems of their own, work issues, etc. But the child must be the second priority, the first being the spouse.
There is no way to stop something once it is started, if the person has a plan. We need to catch them before the plan. All of us are afraid to "tell" on someone else, but what if your telling that you saw a kid with a knife stops him from killing himself or others. Better he be mad at you, but alive.
Most people know a depressed person, and know the symptoms. At what point do we enter their space to help, or stop their tragic behavior? It's a hard one to call, and I don't pretend to have the answers. When a student is acting weird, as most of the ones recently have done, why isn't someone reporting this? Why have we become so tolerant of crazy, rude, horrible behavior?
Do you read computer sites where people tell each other off, and answer questions rudely? And we don't complain. On this site, there is a report button. Has anyone used it, or just went to the next comment?
Nobody can stop someone who WANTS to die. But we can be alert to all other strange behavior. That person who wants to be famous will have actly strangely. That person who is being bullied…did any of your friends bully him and you watched? And didn't stop the bullying?
I treated a family once whose son killed himself…after cleaning his room, starting dinner for the family, doing his homework. All of the things his father insisted had to be done before father got home from work. Stress to be perfect, and the child couldn't measure up, in his eyes. Was it the parent's fault that the child is dead? No, the child made that decision, but it was a package deal…everyone participated in the family dynamics that made this teenager feel he couldn't live up to the family expectations.
We all need to yell and scream for mental health facilities at a young age for those who have problems, which is most of the world. This is not an easy time for anyone, and yet we cut funding for mental health to send trillions to Iraq. And God help those people with their PTSD. They will be affected for generations by this war.
Medicines work, but try to get a teenager to say he is depressed, try to get the last two generations to accept depression as a treatable illness not a shameful condition, and try to get someone to take the medicine. Depression makes one feel powerless, so taking a medicine doesn't alleviate those self esteem issues. It DOES take a village to raise a child. Let's all be good citizens and keep our eyes open and our hearts ready to reach out.References : adolescent counselor.

It is a case of self-will run riot. He isn't really worthy of anyone's compassion. Wallowing in self-pity he lost sight of tomorrow which can be radically different from today. Without doing anything! Instead, his religion is Death. With a cheesy emphasis on "fame"–but over and above anything else, an unshakable conviction he can escape punishment–this is someone who deserves the punishment he gets. He is to blame himself. A pot to be discarded. Certainly not someone to change the world in response to his performance.References :
